Prefers full sun, but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hot climates. Water regularly until established, then reduce frequency as it becomes drought-tolerant.

Planting Instructions:
Full Sun (can tolerate part shade but may reduce flowering)
Germination 20-30 days (Can sometimes take longer, even up to 3 months, especially without proper stratification.)
Indoors 6 weeks before last frost or direct sow after all danger of frost in spring, surface sow by lightly tapping the seeds on top of the soil. Keep the soil at a temperature of 70F. The seeds need some light to germinate. Be careful to not fully cover when planting. Be sure to keep seeds consistently moist until germination occurs and the plants have established. Transplant or thin the seedlings as soon as they reach a height of several inches.
Space plants 18-24 inches apart.
Great for container gardening! Plant up to 3 plants per 16 pots for adorable smaller plants.
COLD STRATIFICATION HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
For best germination rates, Kniphofia Flamenco seeds benefit greatly from a period of cold stratification to mimic natural winter conditions.
Fridge Cold Stratification Method:
* Dampen a paper towel or coffee filter.
* Place the seeds evenly on the damp material.
* Gently roll up the paper towel/filter with the seeds inside.
* Place the rolled-up towel in a sealed plastic bag (e.g., Ziploc bag).
* Store the bag in your refrigerator (not freezer) for minimum 2-4 weeks.
Leave the foliage over the winter to protect the roots. In zones where temperatures drop significantly (e.g., below 10°F), consider tying the foliage together in the fall to form a canopy over the crown. This helps prevent water from settling and freezing in the crown, which can cause rot. A layer of straw mulch can also help to provide winter protection. In early spring, once the danger of hard frost has passed, cut back the old foliage to about 3 inches from the ground to make way for new growth.
