Cardiospermum halicacabum, the lesser balloon vine is a dainty, fern like vine that has tiny white flowers. The seed pods are paper balloons (like Chinese lanterns or tomatillos) and each balloon encapsulates 3 seeds. This plant got its name from their seed, each is black with a small white heart on it. The vines are primarily used for decoration and floral arrangements while the pods are still green. This plant is a perennial in its native tropical and subtropical home, ranging from China to South America and Mexico and an annual in colder climates as it cannot survive frost.
