The seeds require light for germination so when we start them in trays we sow them on the surface of our potting material and then dust them very lightly with sand or vermiculite.  They are quick to germinate but slow to grow.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHere in zone 7 we generally we start them in early February indoors and put them out in in our garden in late March as they like cool weather to set their roots, but we are prepared to cover them when we have a frost threat.  They prefer very rich soil and flourish with moist soil conditions.
